The Pattern Beneath the Surface of Partner and Family Dynamics (Part 2)
The first exploration addressed the architecture of surface behavior, pattern, and root. This exploration goes deeper into how the surface and the root interact over time and what that means for change.
The Feedback Loop
The surface behaviors and the root calibration exist in a continuous feedback loop. Each accommodation reinforces the root prediction: “accommodation was required, accommodation preserved the connection, accommodation was the right strategy.”
Each new accommodation adds weight to the root calibration, making the threshold for automatic accommodation slightly lower. Over years and decades, the pattern’s grip tightens not because the original conditions persist but because the feedback loop has been running continuously.
Breaking Into the Loop
The feedback loop can be broken at several points. The most accessible entry points:
At the surface: A behavioral change that interrupts the accommodation before it completes. This doesn’t change the root directly, but it interrupts the feedback and begins to generate counter-evidence.
At the prediction: Naming the prediction — “my nervous system is predicting that holding this position will damage the relationship” — introduces a gap between the prediction and acting on it.
At the body: A somatic intervention at the moment of activation that shifts the physiological conditions slightly. Not enough to eliminate the activation, but enough to widen the choice space.
Why Surface Interventions Work
Surface interventions — small behavioral changes in ordinary relational contexts — aren’t superficial. Each one that produces a different outcome (not the predicted catastrophe) is a data point at the root level. Over many iterations, the data accumulates into genuine root-level updating.
The surface is where the loop is most accessible. The root is where the change ultimately happens.
The daily practice systematically breaks into the feedback loop at multiple points.
The Abundance GPS Skool community witnesses the loop-breaking in relational context.
