A money mindset is the set of beliefs, feelings and habits you bring to money: how you earn it, charge for it, spend it, keep it and talk about it. For entrepreneurs, a healthy money mindset matters, but positive thinking alone rarely changes it. What changes it is releasing the old money rules you picked up as a child, and building real money systems around your business at the same time.
Most money mindset advice comes from banks and finance writers. It is about budgets and saving. That is useful, but it misses the person who already knows all that and still undercharges, still hides the offer, still panics when one payment is late. This page is for that person.
What is a money mindset?
Your money mindset is the answer your whole self gives when money comes up. Not just your thoughts. Your body too. The quick tightness when you name your price. The urge to explain a raise. The relief when a client cancels, because now you don’t have to deliver.
Some of it is conscious. Most of it isn’t. It was learned early, from what you saw and heard at home. The psychologist Dr Brad Klontz calls these early beliefs “money scripts”, and his research has done a lot to show how much they shape adult money habits. Our article on how childhood money messages are still writing your story goes into this.
Why positive thinking isn’t enough
You have probably tried the positive route. Affirmations. Gratitude for money. Visualising the bank balance. There is nothing wrong with any of it. But for many people it doesn’t move the needle, and some feel worse after.
Here is why. Positive thinking works on the thoughts you choose. A money mindset mostly runs on the ones you didn’t choose. When the two disagree, the older one usually wins. It has had thirty years of practice.
That is the heart of what we teach at MiraclesFor.me:
Because manifesting is as natural as breathing. It is already running, and it is already obeying the conditioning it was handed. So the work is releasing the brakes, rising above that conditioning, and building real structure and flow around abundance — the mindset, the financial plumbing, the entrepreneurial steps.
Notice that mindset is only the first of three. The other two are financial plumbing and entrepreneurial steps. A money mindset shift that never touches those two stays a nice feeling. It does not become money in the bank.
We have written more on this in why the solution to money blocks isn’t more money mindset and six things that are not money mindset problems.
How a money mindset shows up in a business
In a business, the money mindset is easy to see once you know where to look. A few common signs:
- You quote a price, then lower it before the client says anything.
- You give far more than you charge for, and feel uneasy asking for payment.
- Money comes in, then quietly leaks out, and you’re not sure where it went.
- You avoid looking at your accounts, and feel dread when you do.
- A good month makes you nervous instead of glad.
- You feel you must justify wanting more, as if wanting were greedy.
None of these mean something is wrong with you. They are old rules doing what they were built to do: keep you safe in a world that once felt unsafe around money.
Where David’s own money brake came from
David Cameron Gikandi has written his own story down, and money runs all through it. In his early twenties he shared an income goal with his father. The reply was a question: “What for? Why do you need all that?”
Year after year, a pattern kept showing up. In his words: “Somehow, I’d cut myself off from money. Then I’d panic. I’d terrify myself.” And: “The same terror from childhood, resurrected by a missed payment. Objectively small, but internally catastrophic.”
That is what a money mindset looks like from the inside. It is not a lack of knowledge. David had written A Happy Pocket Full of Money, an international bestseller. The knowledge was there. The old rules were louder. Seeing them clearly is what began to loosen them. As he puts it today: “Only now, in my 50th year, do I fully see it, and I am mostly free of it, compared to earlier years.”
How to change your money mindset: three parts
A real money mindset shift for entrepreneurs has three parts that work together. Skip one and the other two wobble.
1. Mindset: find the old rule
Pick one money moment that keeps going wrong, like sending invoices or raising rates. Notice what you feel in your body just before it. Then ask, gently, “Where did I learn that this was dangerous?” You are not looking for someone to blame. You are looking for the rule, so you can see that it was learned, and can be unlearned.
If the moment brings up a lot of pain, it is wise to work with a qualified therapist. Old money fear is often tied to old family pain, and you deserve proper support with that.
2. Financial plumbing: give money somewhere to go
“Financial plumbing” is David’s term for the money systems that catch and hold what comes in. Separate accounts. A set share for savings, tax and growth. A clear picture of what comes in and what goes out. Plumbing does something positive thinking can’t: it keeps working on your worst day. David’s mini-course Clean Up Your Money Plumbing walks through the basics.
3. Entrepreneurial steps: make the money real
Money comes from offers, prices and sales. So the third part is practical. Set a price you can say without flinching. Make one clear offer. Ask for the sale. If pricing is where it hurts most, Pricing Confidence In 5 Days is built for exactly that.
These three map onto the Three Pillars. The money side sits in the Economic Machine, and the inner side sits in Mind & Heart. A money mindset lives where they meet.
What a positive money mindset really looks like
A positive money mindset is not constant cheerfulness about money. It is calm. You can look at the numbers. You can name a price and stop talking. You can have a slow month without deciding you are a failure. You can want more without guilt, and still be generous.
That calm rarely comes from trying to feel good. It comes from two things over time: the old fear losing its grip, and the systems around your money getting strong enough that you can trust them.
Questions people ask
What is a money mindset in simple terms?
It is the way your beliefs, feelings and habits react to money. It shapes how you charge, spend, save and receive, often without you noticing.
How do I change my money mindset?
Find one old money rule and see where it came from, build simple money systems that hold what comes in, and take one practical business step, like setting a clear price. All three together work better than any one alone.
Is a money mindset the same as a money block?
They are close. A money block is one specific place where your money mindset stops you, like raising prices. Our complete guide to money blocks covers them in detail.
Why do I feel guilty about wanting more money?
Often because, early on, wanting more was met with shame or a question like “What for?” The guilt is a learned rule, not a truth about you.
Can mindset work replace financial advice?
No. Mindset work helps you act on good advice. For tax, debt or investing, talk to a qualified adviser.
