What Is a Rate Increase? A Practitioner’s Definition

A rate increase is the act of changing what you charge for your services to a higher amount. That is the surface definition — and it is incomplete.

For practitioners — coaches, healers, consultants, spiritual guides, and service providers of all kinds — a rate increase is more accurately described as a declaration. It is the practitioner stating, through a price, that the work they deliver warrants more than what they have been asking for.

The Surface Definition vs. the Actual Thing

On the surface: a rate increase means the number changes. A practitioner who charged $150 per session now charges $200. A coach whose monthly retainer was $800 now asks $1,100. The change is a number.

The fuller picture of what a rate increase is: the number is the output of a process that involves the practitioner’s assessment of what their work produces, their relationship to what they deserve to receive, and their readiness to hold the new number when it is tested.

Without that process, a rate increase is a number that the practitioner states but does not fully inhabit. With it, a rate increase is a genuine shift in how the practitioner positions and carries their work.

What a Rate Increase Is Not

A rate increase is not:
– A reward the market grants for years of service
– A consequence of inflation that happens automatically
– A negotiating position that the practitioner expects to soften
– A request that requires justification to each client

These framings are common, but they locate the authority for the rate outside the practitioner. A well-grounded rate increase locates the authority inside the practitioner’s own assessment of the work.

What It Actually Involves

What changes before the rate changes: a genuine rate increase typically involves the practitioner doing inner work before the outer announcement. They review what the work has produced. They sit with the new number until it feels ordinary rather than alarming. They decide in advance how they will handle the transition — who, if anyone, will be grandfathered at the old rate, and for how long.

The distinction between rate increases from different positions: rate increases made from a clear inner position tend to hold. Those made from hope, pressure, or desperation tend to erode. The definition of a rate increase that sticks includes the practitioner’s inner readiness as a component, not just the price change itself.

The Identity Dimension

The identity dimension of a rate increase: every rate increase asks the practitioner to inhabit a version of themselves that charges more. This is not always comfortable at first. The rate may be stated before it is fully believed. The inner work is closing the gap between the stated number and the genuine belief that the work warrants it.

How rate integrity connects to rate increases: rate integrity is the quality of alignment between what the practitioner states they charge and what they actually receive — consistently, without negotiation or erosion. A rate increase, fully executed, produces a new level of rate integrity.

A rate increase is a price change and a declaration and an identity shift — often all at once. Understanding it as all three is what allows practitioners to approach it with the preparation it actually requires.
