Why I Understand Boundaries and Difficult Conversations But Can’t Make Them Feel Natural
You’ve practiced. You’ve used the scripts. You’ve gotten better at having the conversations. And still — they don’t feel like you. They feel performed. Rehearsed. Like you’re doing an impression of someone who’s good at this rather than actually being someone who’s good at it.
This is a real and specific phase of the work. And it won’t last forever — but understanding what it is makes it easier to work through.
Why Practiced Skills Feel Performed
When you learn a new behavior that contradicts an older, deeply ingrained one, the new behavior feels effortful and artificial for a long time. This is neurologically accurate. The older pathway has been worn smooth by years of use. The new one is being cut through resistant material.
The stiffness you feel is the new behavior not yet integrated. It’s not that the behavior is wrong. It’s that it hasn’t become automatic yet.
Everyone who has genuinely changed a deep pattern went through this phase. There was a period where they were technically doing the right thing but it felt like acting. That period, if you stay with the behavior, eventually passes.
What Makes the Shift
The shift from “doing boundaries” to “being boundaried” happens when the behavior becomes supported by a genuine shift in the underlying belief.
When you hold a limit primarily through willpower — overriding the internal pull to defer — it feels performed. Because you’re acting counter to what you believe. The dissonance is real.
When the underlying belief updates — when your nervous system actually registers that it’s safe to hold this limit, when you genuinely believe your needs are worth protecting — the behavior stops feeling performed. It starts feeling true.
The belief update happens through accumulated evidence of the behavior working. It’s the same mechanism: the behavior change precedes the belief change, but the belief change eventually catches up.
Staying With the Awkward Phase
The awkward, performed phase is the one most people quit in. Because the dissonance is uncomfortable, and it’s easy to interpret the discomfort as evidence that the change isn’t working.
The opposite is true. The discomfort is evidence that you’re in between: the old belief is present and the new behavior is present, and they haven’t yet resolved into a new, integrated pattern.
Staying with the behavior — even when it feels awkward, even when it seems like you’re just going through motions — is what allows the integration to happen.
One useful reframe: you’re not performing. You’re practicing. There’s an important difference. Performance is about appearing natural. Practice is about building the thing that will eventually be natural.
The Timeline Is Longer Than Expected
Most people expect the practiced behavior to feel natural within weeks. The actual timeline for deep patterns is longer — often months, sometimes years for the deepest ones.
This is not a problem. It’s the nature of working at the level where the pattern actually lives.
The daily practice helps because it combines the belief examination with the behavioral practice, which accelerates the integration.
