Why Does Working on Partner and Family Dynamics Sometimes Make Things Feel Worse Before Better?

Q: I’ve been working on my limit pattern for a few months. I feel more aware of what’s happening, but I also feel more uncomfortable — I notice the pattern more, and sometimes that makes it feel worse. Is this normal?

This is a very common phase of the work, and it has a clear explanation.

The Observation Phase

Before working on the pattern, the accommodation behaviors run largely automatically. There’s the vague awareness that something isn’t quite right — the resentment, the depletion, the sense of delivering more than feels sustainable — but the moment-to-moment experience of the automatic behavior happening is below full conscious awareness.

As the work proceeds, the observing function develops. You start to see the pattern as it’s happening. This is progress — it’s the beginning of the gap between activation and automatic behavior that will eventually produce choice.

Why It Feels Worse

The discomfort increases because you’re now witnessing something you previously weren’t fully seeing. The accommodation that ran automatically before is now seen running. And because the behavioral change hasn’t fully caught up to the awareness, there’s a period where you see the pattern happening and still can’t stop it.

This feels worse. It adds the discomfort of self-observation to the original cost of the accommodation, without yet providing the relief of reliably different behavior.

What This Phase Means

The increased awareness and increased discomfort is not regression. It’s the necessary phase between automatic unawareness and genuine behavioral change. You can’t change what you can’t see. The development of the seeing function is what makes change possible.

The phase passes when the behavioral practice catches up to the awareness — when the gap between activation and behavior that the awareness opened is filled by new responses that the practice has developed.


Feeling worse before better is a sign the work is progressing, not that it’s going wrong.
