The expectation is that genuine development makes things progressively easier — that as a practitioner moves toward the showing up they’ve been working toward, the approach should become less activating, not more. When the reverse happens, it’s often misread as evidence of regression or as a signal that the approach isn’t working.

What the proximity effect signals is that the practitioner is genuinely near the threshold — that the showing up they’ve been working toward is close enough to the current reality that the protective system can no longer maintain the comfortable distance it has been keeping.

When the threshold was far away — when genuine magnetic showing up was an aspiration rather than an imminent possibility — the protective system didn’t need to work very hard. The aspiration wasn’t threatening because it wasn’t proximate. As the practitioner develops and the threshold draws near, the protective system recognizes the proximity and escalates its activity.

This escalation is the increased triggering. The block hasn’t grown. The protective system has intensified because the thing it’s protecting against is closer than it has been before.

Staying Regulated Through the Proximity Activation

Staying regulated through the proximity activation is the central challenge for practitioners in this phase. The increased activation can be misread as a reason to stop — as a signal that the current direction is wrong or dangerous. This misreading causes the practitioner to turn away from the threshold at the moment of greatest proximity.

What the activation is actually signaling is: you’re close. The protective system is working hard because it can see the threshold. The right response isn’t to turn away from the activation but to stay present with it — to maintain the movement toward the threshold while the activation is occurring, rather than responding to the activation’s implicit directive to retreat.

Body-first at the threshold means attending to the somatic experience of the proximity activation — not suppressing it, not fighting it, not being overwhelmed by it, but genuinely feeling it while continuing to move. This is the specific skill that the proximity phase requires.

Integrating Through the Threshold Rather Than Away From It

Integrating through the threshold rather than away from it is the direction of work in the proximity phase. The integration that the practitioner needs isn’t integration away from the threshold — consolidating at the current level and staying there. It’s integration through the threshold — developing the capacity to remain in the activated state while crossing into the territory the protective system has been maintaining distance from.

This integration happens through genuine tolerated experience of the threshold activation. Each time the practitioner stays present with the proximity activation rather than retreating, the nervous system registers that the threshold is survivable. The activation gradually becomes less overwhelming as the threshold becomes more familiar.

The proximity effect doesn’t last indefinitely. It’s the phase of greatest intensity before the threshold crossing. Practitioners who understand it as a phase rather than as a destination can sustain their movement through it.
