Why Limiting Beliefs Triggers Me More Than It Used To

Awareness Raises the Volume

The first and most important thing to understand: awareness of a pattern does not immediately quieten it. In many cases, awareness raises the volume before it lowers it.

When a belief was operating below the level of conscious attention, it was running quietly in the background — shaping behaviour, influencing choices, but not being perceived as such. When awareness rises, the belief becomes visible. And visible things tend to feel louder than things that were invisible, even if they haven’t actually changed in intensity.

The increased triggering isn’t necessarily the belief getting worse. It’s the belief becoming perceptible in a way it wasn’t before.


The Judgment That Follows Awareness

There’s also a second factor: once you’re aware of a pattern, there tends to be judgment of it. And judgment creates its own activation.

Before awareness: the pattern fires, you respond automatically, and nothing more happens internally.

After awareness: the pattern fires, you notice it, and then you judge yourself for it having fired. The judgment produces its own emotional activation — shame, frustration, self-criticism — which is a second layer of difficulty on top of the original pattern.

So the increased triggering is actually more accurate: it’s the original pattern, plus the judgment of the pattern, plus sometimes the frustration at the judgment. The awareness has made the total activation more visible, not created more activation from scratch.


The Heightened Sensitivity

Inner work, done over time, tends to produce a kind of heightened sensitivity — to your own states, to the states of others, to the subtle textures of interaction. This sensitivity is generally a positive development. But it also means that you feel the triggering more acutely than someone who hasn’t developed that sensitivity.

The person who hasn’t done inner work may move through a triggered moment without noticing it registered at all. The person who has done significant work is more likely to feel it clearly. The feeling is the awareness working correctly — it’s just not the reduction in sensitivity that was expected.


What Tends to Reduce the Triggering

Several things tend to lower the triggering over time:

Regulation capacity — the capacity to return to a settled state more quickly after activation. Not to not be activated, but to move through the activation without it derailing your functioning. The somatic regulation practice builds this capacity specifically.

Reducing the judgment of the triggering — separating the observation of the pattern from the judgment of it. The pattern fires; you notice; you return to baseline. Without the secondary judgment layer, the total activation is considerably reduced.

Continued exposure — with appropriate resourcing, repeated gentle contact with the triggering material tends to reduce its intensity over time. This isn’t exposure therapy in the clinical sense — it’s the gradual building of familiarity that comes from working with something repeatedly in a safe context.

The increased awareness of triggering is, in a specific sense, evidence that the work is functioning. The awareness system has become more sensitive. The regulation system hasn’t yet caught up with the awareness system.

The goal isn’t less awareness. It’s a regulation system strong enough to hold the increasing awareness comfortably.
