Why Limiting Beliefs Triggers Me More Than It Used To

When limiting beliefs start triggering more strongly — when the activation feels more intense, more frequent, or more destabilising than it used to — there are typically a few things happening simultaneously. Understanding which is most active for you changes what to do about it.


Increasing Stakes

One straightforward reason for increasing triggering: you’re attempting more.

As work and life expand, the situations that touch limiting beliefs tend to become higher-stakes. Pricing a higher offer. Speaking to a larger audience. Committing to a longer-term project. The belief that was manageable at lower stakes becomes more activated at higher ones.

If this is what’s happening, the increased triggering is actually a sign of growth — the belief is being asked to operate at a level it wasn’t previously tested at. The triggering is more intense not because the belief has gotten worse, but because the territory has gotten more demanding.

The appropriate response isn’t to retreat to lower stakes. It’s to build the regulation capacity to operate at the new level.


Accumulated Activation Without Release

Another possibility: the pattern has been activated repeatedly over a period of time without sufficient recovery between activations. The nervous system has been in a chronic mild state of activation, and the threshold for triggering has lowered as a result.

This is particularly common in periods of sustained high pressure, significant life change, or when inner work and external demands are both intensifying simultaneously.

The response here is less about working with the belief and more about building recovery time into the system — the somatic regulation practice addresses this specifically. The system needs to return to baseline before the pattern can be engaged effectively.


The Threshold Effect of Inner Work

There’s also a more subtle phenomenon: intensive inner work can temporarily lower the activation threshold as patterns are disturbed and brought closer to the surface. Things that were held more deeply become more accessible — which means more triggerable.

This is usually a stage in the process rather than a permanent state. The work has brought material closer to the surface before it can be processed and released. The experience of being more triggered is often a sign that the work is reaching something that was previously inaccessible.

The appropriate response is to ensure there’s enough support and regulation capacity during this stage — so that the increased accessibility can be used productively rather than experienced as overwhelming.


Increased Sensitivity

If inner work has produced genuine growth in self-awareness and sensitivity, the increased triggering may simply be the awareness registering more accurately.

Before the sensitivity developed, the belief fired and produced automatic behaviour without being felt clearly. After the sensitivity developed, the same firing is felt more acutely — registered, noticed, experienced. The same event is now more present in consciousness.

This isn’t the belief getting worse. It’s the awareness getting better. The task is to build the regulation and equanimity that can hold the increasing awareness comfortably.


Building the Capacity to Hold More

In all of these cases, what’s required is an expansion of capacity — specifically, the capacity to be in contact with the triggering without being destabilised by it.

This is different from the belief not triggering. It’s the ability to remain functional, present, and making good choices even when the belief is activated — to have enough regulation capacity that the triggering doesn’t determine the behaviour.
