Why Limiting Beliefs Got Worse After I Started Doing Inner Work
This is one of the most disorienting experiences in the inner work journey: you start doing the work. You meditate, journal, go to therapy or coaching, read widely. And then your limiting beliefs — the very things you were trying to address — seem to intensify.
You feel them more acutely. They fire more frequently. The pattern seems louder, not quieter.
Here’s why this happens, and why it’s more meaningful than it feels.
What Inner Work Does to the Surface
Before significant inner work begins, most limiting beliefs operate beneath conscious awareness. They’re running quietly in the background — shaping behaviour, filtering perception, influencing choices — but they’re not perceived as beliefs. They feel like reality. Like just how things are.
When inner work begins, it raises the threshold of awareness. Things that were below the surface become visible. Patterns that were automatic become noticeable. The belief that was running in the background gets brought into the foreground.
Being in the foreground is louder than being in the background. What you now experience as “worse” is often actually “more visible.” The belief hasn’t intensified — the attention to it has intensified.
The Disturbance Effect
There’s also a specific phenomenon that happens when genuinely held beliefs are disturbed: they often activate more strongly before they shift.
Think of it like sediment in water. When the water is still, the sediment rests at the bottom. When you introduce movement — inner work — the sediment rises into the water before it can be filtered out. The initial effect of the movement is cloudier water, not clearer.
The increased activation of limiting beliefs following the beginning of inner work is often exactly this: the disturbance effect. The work has moved something that was settled. The experience is temporarily cloudier. This is a stage, not a destination.
The New Sensitivity
Inner work also builds sensitivity — the capacity to notice subtlety in your own internal states. This is generally a positive development. But a more sensitive system registers more.
Before inner work: the limiting belief fires, you respond automatically, and the quality of the activation isn’t fully felt.
After significant inner work: the limiting belief fires, you notice it clearly, you feel the quality of the activation with more precision, and the experience registers as more significant.
The same belief, felt more acutely, reads as worse. But it’s the awareness that has increased, not the belief itself.
The Secondary Layer
There’s also a secondary layer that often forms once inner work is underway: the belief about the inner work not working. “I’m doing all this work and things are getting harder” becomes its own belief — one that can feel more threatening than the original patterns, because it threatens the solution itself.
This secondary belief is worth naming explicitly: the difficulty of the transition is not evidence that the work isn’t working. It’s often evidence that it is.
What This Stage Requires
Patience with the cloudiness. The disturbance effect isn’t permanent. The sediment rises and then, with continued movement, moves through. This requires trusting the process during the phase when the evidence appears to be against it.
Regulation support. When awareness is increasing faster than regulation capacity, the experience is of overwhelm. Building the nervous system’s regulation capacity — specifically, the capacity to be in contact with difficult material without being overwhelmed by it — is the specific skill this phase requires. The somatic regulation practice addresses this directly.
Community and shared context. Knowing that this experience is common — that the disturbance effect is recognised and named — is itself regulating. The isolation of believing you’re the only one whose inner work produced this effect is an additional difficulty worth removing.
