Why Healing Inner Child and Wounds Made Me More Sensitive, Not Less
This is one of the healing experiences that almost nobody prepares you for: you begin the work expecting to become less reactive, less affected, less vulnerable to the wound’s activation — and instead you find yourself more sensitive than before.
More easily moved. More quickly activated. Things that used to wash over you now land.
And you’re left wondering: is this the wrong direction? Did something go sideways?
Read this slowly. The answer is likely not what you’d expect.
The Original Insensitivity Was Protection
Before the work, the relative absence of sensitivity wasn’t health. It was armor.
The child who learned that their feelings were overwhelming, or inconvenient, or dangerous developed a way of managing those feelings that looked, from the outside, like composure or resilience. The feelings weren’t absent. They were routed away from awareness — managed below the surface rather than experienced consciously.
Over time, this became the baseline. Calm, competent, functional — and genuinely less aware of the wound’s activations because the protective system was working. Feelings that fired below the surface didn’t register as feelings in the ordinary sense.
This isn’t the same as not being affected. It’s being affected in a way that was kept away from conscious experience.
What the Work Uncovers
When you begin inner child work, the protective system gradually relaxes. Not all at once, and not permanently, but the signal that you’re attending to what it’s been protecting allows it to begin releasing some of its dampening function.
What’s been below the surface becomes more available to conscious experience.
This is an increase in sensitivity. It’s also, importantly, an increase in contact with your own inner life.
The things that now land where before they passed through — those are things that were already affecting you. They were affecting your nervous system, shaping your responses, influencing your choices. You just weren’t fully aware of them as feelings.
What feels like increased vulnerability is often increased awareness of what was already there.
The Distinction That Matters
There’s an important distinction between two kinds of increased sensitivity.
The first is the healthy unfolding of awareness: feelings that were previously managed below the surface becoming more accessible. This makes things feel more, but it also makes it possible to work with what’s present rather than managing it unconsciously.
The second is overwhelm: the wound material flooding in faster than the nervous system can process, producing ongoing distress, difficulty functioning, and no recovery arc.
The first type of sensitivity is part of healing. The second type is a signal that the work needs more stabilization, more support, or slower pacing.
If what you’re experiencing is the first — more feeling, but with a quality of depth and aliveness, and with recovery — you’re likely encountering healthy increased contact with your own inner experience.
If what you’re experiencing is the second — chronic overwhelm, functional difficulty, no recovery — the approach needs calibration.
Why Sensitivity Can Be Its Own Form of Strength
There’s a longer arc here worth naming.
The sensitivity that’s developing through inner child work isn’t the same as the vulnerability of the original wound. The wound’s sensitivity was uncontrolled — it fired automatically and without choice.
The sensitivity that develops through the work is different: it’s increasingly available to be worked with. You catch it earlier. You have more choice about what to do with what you’re feeling. The awareness that was previously unavailable is now something you can actually be with, and sometimes influence.
This is not the absence of sensitivity. It’s a relationship with sensitivity that’s more workable than the original wound’s version.
More sensitivity, for now, may be the most honest sign that the work is doing something real. The feeling is different from what you expected — and more genuine than the composure that the wound’s armor made necessary.
