Why Does Limiting Beliefs Feel More Intense When Things Are Going Well?

The first article with this question explained the upper-limiting mechanism and what it means that success triggers limiting belief activation. This article addresses a specific follow-on: what to do when you recognize the pattern is activating, specifically because things are going well.

Q: I now understand why success triggers the pattern. But understanding why doesn’t stop it from happening. What do I actually do when I recognize I’m upper-limiting in response to something going well?

The Recognition Itself Is Progress

The first thing to acknowledge: if you can recognize the pattern as it’s happening — “I’m upper-limiting because of this success” — you’ve already developed something significant. Most people can’t name it while it’s occurring. The recognition creates the gap between activation and response that makes a different choice possible.

So the recognition is the first step. It doesn’t eliminate the activation, but it changes what’s available.

Three Immediate Moves

1. Name it precisely.

Not just “I’m upper-limiting” — name what specifically is activating. “The pattern is predicting that if I receive this success fully, I will now be expected to sustain it and will fail.” Or: “The pattern is predicting that being this visibly successful will change certain relationships.” Or: “The pattern is predicting that I’ll be exposed as not actually this good.”

The precision matters. A vague sense of “the pattern is active” is less workable than a specific understanding of what the pattern is predicting in this instance.

2. Don’t make decisions from the activated state.

The decisions the upper-limiting activation generates — reduce visibility, spontaneously offer a discount, retreat from the exposure the success created — are pattern-driven, not strategically sound. Don’t make them while the activation is at its peak.

Explicitly defer significant decisions for 24-48 hours. In that time, the activation will typically reduce enough to allow for better-quality decision-making.

3. Deliberately receive the success.

Counterintuitively, the most productive response to upper-limiting activation is more deliberate receiving, not less. Specifically: a few minutes of attention to what is actually true about the success. The result that happened. The impact that was created. The evidence that the prediction “I’m not good enough for this” was wrong.

This deliberate receiving — letting the success actually land rather than immediately moving to the next thing or explaining it away — provides the nervous system with the data that updates the prediction model. The pattern is trying to prevent this receiving. The receiving is precisely what reduces the activation over time.

The Relational Move

Sharing the success with someone who can receive it genuinely is one of the most powerful moves available in this situation. Not to seek validation — to allow the relational experience of being celebrated in a context that can hold it.

The upper-limiting pattern often activates most strongly in private. In community, with people who can witness the success and reflect it back, the activation typically reduces. The relational safety provides the nervous system with a different experience of what it means to have this level of success be visible and real.

The Longer Work

Beyond the immediate moves, the upper-limiting activation at success points is material for the ongoing work. Each instance provides specific data about:
– What kind of success triggers the most intense activation
– What the pattern specifically predicts in those moments
– What the body does in response
– How long the activation lasts and what supports its reduction

This data, tracked over multiple instances, builds a precise map of the upper-limiting pattern — which makes the ongoing work increasingly targeted and efficient.

The Counterintuitive Truth

The upper-limiting activation that arrives when things are going well is, in a real sense, a sign that the work is working. The pattern is activating because the situation it was designed to prevent is actually occurring.

The success is real. The activation is the pattern’s response to the real success. Working through the activation — receiving the success anyway, making the deliberate data-gathering moves — is how the pattern’s predictions get disconfirmed and the ceiling rises.

The Invitation

The Abundance GPS community provides the relational context for receiving success in community — which is one of the most direct ways to work through upper-limiting activation.
