Why Content and Visibility Got Worse After I Started Doing Inner Work
If content and visibility seems to have gotten worse since you started doing inner work — more triggering, more complicated, harder to manage — this is counterintuitive but it has clear explanations.
Explanation 1: Numbing and Suppression Were Working
Before inner work, many people manage visibility blocks through suppression: not thinking about it, distraction, staying busy, reducing awareness of the internal experience. These mechanisms don’t resolve the pattern but they do reduce its conscious intensity.
Inner work typically increases awareness, reduces suppression, and brings what was unconscious into conscious experience. The result is that the pattern that was previously managed through numbing is now more present, more felt, more immediate.
This is not regression. It is the block becoming more visible — which is a necessary step toward working with it.
Explanation 2: Inner Work Has Opened What Was Protected
As inner work reduces general defensive structures — as the person becomes more open, more sensitive, more emotionally present — the specific pattern of content and visibility becomes more accessible to experience rather than less. The protection has thinned. What was protected by the numbness is now more directly felt.
This is especially true for people who begin inner work that wasn’t specifically targeting content and visibility. The general opening of the system increases sensitivity across the board, including sensitivity to the visibility pattern.
Explanation 3: The Content Has Become More Genuine
As inner work deepens, many people find that the content they want to create becomes more personally genuine — more directly expressive of what they actually think, feel, and know. More genuine content carries more personal risk than generic content. The stakes of being seen through it have increased.
More triggering visibility may be the cost of more genuine expression. That is a different problem — and a more solvable one — than the content being genuinely worse.
Explanation 4: You’re Closer to the Core
Inner work that moves toward the actual core of the content and visibility pattern often produces increased activation before it produces relief. The pattern defends itself. As the defenses lower, the protected material becomes more accessible — which initially means more intensity, not less.
Building internal safety around showing up consistently — the container for working with what’s more present.
Somatic regulation for content and visibility — for managing the increased activation.

Worse first, then better. That’s the arc for many patterns. You’re in the middle of it.
