The Insight That Changed My Entire Approach to Partner and Family Dynamics
The insight that most changes the trajectory of work with partner and family dynamics isn’t a complex one. But arriving at it — really arriving, not just intellectually grasping it — tends to restructure everything else.
The Insight
The accommodation pattern is not a relationship problem. It’s a nervous system pattern that happens to activate in relational contexts.
This sounds like a small distinction. It isn’t.
When the pattern is understood as a relationship problem, the implied solution is to fix the relationship — to change the other person, to have the right conversations, to find better relationships, to get the relational conditions right.
When the pattern is understood as a nervous system pattern that activates in relational contexts, the implied solution is different: build the nervous system’s capacity to hold a different response in those contexts, through graduated practice and evidence accumulation.
What This Changes Practically
It changes where the work is directed. Not toward fixing the relationship or the other person — toward building specific nervous system capacities in yourself.
It changes the relationship to the other people involved. Partners and family members stop being the problem to solve and become the relational context in which the work happens.
It changes the timeline expectation. Nervous system updating is slower than relationship fixing seems to promise but produces more durable results.
It changes the question from “how do I get them to understand?” to “what is the specific practice that builds the capacity I need here?”
The Relief of the Insight
There’s something relieving about this reframe for most people. The project becomes cleaner, more under your control, more specific. The work is within you — in your nervous system, in your practice, in the accumulated experience you generate.
The daily practice is designed around this insight.
The Abundance GPS Skool community is the relational field where this nervous-system work happens in community.
