The Coach Who Built Everything and Launched Nothing
Yewande had three complete programs sitting in Google Drive.
The first one she had built over eight months — a twelve-week leadership coaching curriculum for mid-career professionals. It was thorough, well-designed, grounded in solid methodology. She had never launched it. She had “needed more time” to develop the workbooks.
The second was a shorter, more accessible version — four weeks, designed for a broader audience. It had taken five months to build. She had launched it once, to her email list, with one email, and received no responses. She had interpreted this as evidence that the market wasn’t ready.
The third was the current one — a hybrid coaching and self-study format. She was three months into building it and hadn’t told anyone it was coming.
The Pattern
Yewande had what could be called creation-without-launch pattern — a specific form of approach sabotage in which the building phase is fully engaged but the release phase is perpetually deferred.
The building phase was safe. In the building phase, the work was improving and the outcome was not yet determined. The program could still become exactly what she imagined it to be. The market’s response was unknown, which meant it could still be the response she was hoping for.
Launch ended that. Launch produced a specific, real response — or a specific, real absence of response. Either outcome was more confronting than the potential that the building phase preserved.
What Made This Difficult to See
Yewande was genuinely building. The programs were real. The hours she was putting in were real. The progress she was making was real.
From the outside — and largely from the inside — this looked like productivity. She was working hard on her business. The fact that none of it was in the market could be explained at any given moment as “almost ready.”
The approach sabotage pattern is particularly effective when the person has a real skill for the building phase. Yewande was good at curriculum design. Each program genuinely was better than the previous one. This made it possible to justify another round of development: the new version really would be more effective.
The Recognition
The moment of clarity came not through analysis but through a specific conversation.
A colleague asked how the program was going. Yewande said she was still refining it.
“How long have you been refining it?”
“About three months.”
“How long did you refine the last one?”
Yewande paused. “Five months.”
“And the one before that?”
She did the math aloud: eight months. Then she said something she hadn’t intended to: “I’ve been building programs for almost two years and I’ve launched once. To my own list. With one email.”
Hearing herself say it, the pattern became visible.
The Work
The practice was specific: launch the current program before it was finished. Not a full launch — a waitlist announcement to five people she knew and trusted, with a completion date three weeks out.
The announcement produced immediate activation: what if they signed up and the program wasn’t ready? What if she couldn’t deliver it? What if the response was the same as the last launch?
She sent the email.
Three people responded with interest. One asked about pricing.
The activation was intense but not incapacitating. The program was now constrained to a deadline. It would be finished — not perfect, but finished — by the date she had stated.
She delivered the pilot to two paying clients. Both completed it. One asked to continue working with her. One gave a testimonial.
Neither outcome was the catastrophe the pattern had predicted. The imperfect program had produced real results.
What Changed
The shift for Yewande was not about becoming someone who launches without building. She still built carefully. The shift was in the sequence: build to viable, then launch, then improve.
The pattern had been building to perfect, then finding a new reason the current build wasn’t sufficient, then building again. The new sequence broke the cycle at the point of the perpetual deferral.
Two more programs came out in the following year — both launched before she felt fully ready, both refined through the experience of delivering them. The refining happened faster and with better information than three months of solo development could produce.
The Google Drive still contained the original twelve-week program. She knew now that it would never launch from there.
