Should I Change My Niche as Part of My Identity Rebrand?
Q: I’m doing rebrand work and I keep feeling like I need to change my niche to fully express the new identity. Is niche change part of this process, or am I using it to avoid something?
Both things can be true simultaneously, which is why this question deserves careful examination rather than a simple yes or no.
When niche change is genuinely part of the rebrand:
Sometimes the identity shift that’s happening involves a real change in who you serve best — a different level of client, a different specific problem, a different market segment. If the old niche was chosen when the calibration was organized around accessibility, affordability, and being needed, a calibration update toward a less conditional worth might naturally direct toward a different client profile.
In those cases, niche evolution is a real downstream effect of the identity shift, not a cause of it.
When niche change is avoidance:
The nervous system is inventive in its protection strategies. A niche change requires a new audience, new positioning, a new portfolio of relationships to build — which conveniently delays the activation contexts where the calibration work would need to happen. If the pricing pattern runs with the current audience, it will run with a new audience too. The niche change doesn’t change the calibration.
The question worth asking: “Does the identity shift I’m working on require a different audience to actualize? Or would the same calibration update work in my current niche?”
If the answer is honest: most calibration updates work in any niche. The pricing calibration, the visibility calibration, the scope calibration — these run across industries and audiences. A new niche provides a new context but not a new calibration.
A diagnostic approach:
Run the identity experiments in the current niche first. If, after the calibration update, the niche still feels misaligned for real strategic reasons — not avoidance reasons — then evaluate the niche change from a grounded place.
The self-concept update that identity shifts for conscious entrepreneurs require happens independent of niche. The niche can be evaluated once the identity is clearer.
