How Do I Know If My Partner and Family Dynamics Pattern Is Mild, Moderate, or Severe?

Q: I recognize some of these patterns in myself but don’t know how significant they are. How do people typically assess the severity?

This is a useful question because severity affects both the pacing of the work and the level of support that’s likely to be helpful.

Indicators of a Mild Pattern

  • You can hold most professional limits most of the time but lose access in specific high-activation contexts
  • The pattern fires reliably in one or two specific relationship categories but not broadly
  • When you do accommodate beyond your own preferences, the resentment is mild and passes quickly
  • You can have most direct professional conversations with relative ease; a few feel very difficult
  • The business costs are present but not structurally significant

Indicators of a Moderate Pattern

  • Direct communication requires significant effort across a wide range of professional relationships
  • Scope management and pricing are persistently difficult
  • You can identify the pattern reliably after the fact but struggle to interrupt it in the moment
  • Depletion and resentment are noticeable and recurring, not occasional
  • The business costs are meaningful: under-pricing is significant, scope creep is a regular feature of engagements

Indicators of a Severe Pattern

  • The accommodation behavior is pervasive across virtually all relational contexts
  • Direct communication feels genuinely dangerous — the threat predictions are intense and feel certain
  • Depletion and resentment are significant features of professional and personal life
  • The business has significant structural problems downstream of the pattern
  • The pattern is affecting health (sleep, physical symptoms related to stress) or mental health meaningfully

What This Means for the Work

Mild patterns often respond well to integrated within-practice work. Moderate patterns benefit significantly from community and relational support. Severe patterns typically benefit from professional therapeutic support alongside the personal practice.
