How to Apply the GPS+I Framework to Trauma and Nervous System
The GPS+I framework — Goal, Problem, Solutions, Integration — is a four-week transformation cycle. Applied to trauma and nervous system work, it provides structure for practitioners who want to move through the healing work with intentionality rather than reactively. This article shows exactly how to apply it. Take your time with this.
The Framework Overview
GPS+I is a monthly cycle designed to take a practitioner from orientation to embodied integration within four weeks. Each week has a specific function:
- Week 1 (Goal): Identify what you are working toward and what functional change you’re aiming for
- Week 2 (Problem): Identify the specific nervous system pattern that is most directly limiting that goal
- Week 3 (Solutions): Apply specific regulatory and behavioral practices to address the identified pattern
- Week 4 (Integration): Consolidate what has shifted, build evidence into the body, and prepare the ground for the next cycle
Week 1: Setting the Nervous System Goal
The goal in this framework is not an outcome target like “earn more money.” It is a functional goal: a specific change in how the nervous system responds in a particular professional context.
Questions for Week 1:
- In which professional situation does my nervous system most reliably move me out of my functional range? (Enrollment conversations? Publishing content? Scope conversations? Launches?)
- What would I be able to do in that situation that I currently cannot do while activated? (State the full rate without offering a discount? Publish without softening the recommendation? Hold the agreed scope without appeasement?)
- What would “working well” look like in that situation, in specific behavioral terms?
Write the goal as a specific behavioral statement: “My goal is to state the full rate in the next five enrollment conversations without an unsolicited discount.” Not “My goal is to feel less anxious.” The behavioral specificity is what makes the goal measurable and what gives the nervous system concrete evidence to update from.
Week 2: Identifying the Problem Pattern
Week 2 is for honest, non-shaming assessment of the specific nervous system pattern that is blocking the goal.
The assessment questions:
- What does the activation feel like in the body when I am in that triggering situation? (Heart rate, breath pattern, chest tension, belly drop, cognitive narrowing?)
- How early does the activation begin — before the situation, in anticipation? Or only once I am in it?
- What is the behavioral output the activation produces? (The discount, the scope expansion, the hedged content, the withdrawn visibility?)
- What is the nervous system predicting in that situation? (Rejection, relational damage, loss of authority, exposure to threat?)
- What does the current evidence record say about the accuracy of that prediction? (How many times has the predicted outcome actually materialized versus how many times the trigger has fired?)
This is not a session of self-criticism. It is a precise diagnostic — the same quality of honest assessment a practitioner brings to understanding a client’s pattern. Apply that same quality to your own.
Week 3: Applying Specific Solutions
Week 3 is the practice week. It is the week to bring specific regulatory and behavioral interventions into the actual professional situations where the pattern activates.
Three-part practice for Week 3:
Regulation: Identify one body-based regulation practice and use it consistently before and after each triggering professional event this week. Physiological sighs (double inhale, long exhale), bilateral stimulation, cold water, grounding, orienting. Use it before entering the situation, use it after.
Pre-commitment: Make one specific behavioral commitment before each triggering situation this week. State it aloud or write it. Enter the situation with the pre-commitment in place. Follow the pre-commitment even if the activation is pulling in a different direction.
Evidence logging: After each triggering situation, log: What was the prediction? What was the behavioral output? What actually happened? Three sentences minimum. This week, you are building the evidence record that the nervous system will use to update.
Week 4: Integration
Week 4 is not the end of the work — it is the consolidation phase within this cycle, and the preparation for the next cycle.
Integration practices for Week 4:
Evidence review: Read the entries from the trigger journal from this week. Look for the pattern: how many times did the predicted outcome materialize versus how many times the trigger fired? What does the record say about the prediction’s accuracy?
Behavioral acknowledgment: Name specifically what changed this week in behavioral terms. Not “I felt better.” “I stated the full rate in two out of three enrollment conversations this week, compared to zero in three the previous month.” The behavioral specificity is what counts.
Somatic consolidation: Spend 10–15 minutes in a gentle bilateral practice — slow walking, alternating tapping, or swimming if available — while holding the week’s behavioral evidence in mind. You are supporting the body in receiving the new experiential information, not just the mind.
Next cycle preparation: Based on Week 2’s assessment, what is the next pattern to address? Or if the same pattern needs more cycles (which is likely — 12–18 months is a realistic timeline), what will next month’s goal, problem, solutions, and integration look like?
Realistic Expectations for the GPS+I Cycle
One cycle of four weeks produces early evidence, not full integration. The patterns formed over years update through years of practice. Expect:
- By the end of Month 1: Increased awareness of when the pattern is firing, early practice of pre-commitments with moderate follow-through
- By Month 3: More consistent pre-commitment follow-through, some shortening of activation duration
- By Month 6: Visible shift in behavioral record, beginning of window expansion
- By Month 12–18: Structural change in business patterns — rates held, scope maintained, revenue moving past previous ceilings
