How Do I Know If My Identity Shift Is Actually Working?
Q: I’m doing the work but I can’t tell if I’m actually changing or just having good weeks. How do I distinguish genuine progress from temporary variation?
The signals that indicate genuine calibration update are different from the signals most people are monitoring. Good weeks, elevated motivation, and positive emotional states are real experiences that don’t necessarily indicate calibration change. The actual markers are more specific.
Markers of genuine calibration update:
Reduced force of the automatic impulse: The accommodation impulse, the qualification impulse, the scope-expansion impulse — these don’t disappear suddenly. But genuine progress shows up as the impulse arriving with less urgency. Where it used to arrive immediately and strongly, there’s now more space before it, or it’s weaker when it does arrive.
Automatic behavior in the new pattern: The shift from conscious effort to automatic response. You’re not effortfully holding the rate — you’re holding it because holding it now feels like the natural thing. That shift from effortful to automatic is one of the clearest markers.
Old patterns feel strange: When the old behavior that used to be default starts to feel unfamiliar — when you find yourself noticing “I would have accommodated there and now that seems odd” — that’s the calibration update at work.
Consistency under normal activation: The new behavior holds not just on good days but on average days. Not necessarily under high activation or depletion — but under the ordinary daily conditions.
What’s not a marker:
Feeling more confident in reflection, feeling inspired after a workshop or session, having a successful conversation after intentional preparation — these are real but not specifically indicators of calibration update. They could reflect cognitive shifts or motivational states that aren’t durable.
The self-concept update that identity shifts for conscious entrepreneurs require is visible in the automatic layer, not the motivated layer. Monitor what the pattern does when you’re not consciously trying to do anything different.
