A Technique for Working Through Selling Without Pushing: The Somatic Dimension

The original before-during-after technique describes the before, during, and after structure for working through selling without pushing: the genuine service inquiry before the conversation, the genuine fit question during it, and the evidence reflection afterward. This companion article develops the somatic dimension of each stage — what specifically to do with the body’s experience at each point.

The somatic dimension matters because the body’s experience in the enrollment conversation determines the quality of what the prospect receives. The words can be genuine service language while the body is broadcasting outcome-focus. Working with the somatic dimension specifically makes the internal alignment between words and body possible.

Before: The Body Audit and Service Grounding

Five minutes before the enrollment conversation, two somatic steps.

The body audit: scan from head to torso and note where activation is present. Tightening in the chest? Held breath? A quality of bracing in the shoulders? Note the location and intensity without trying to change it. This is the body’s current state entering the conversation.

The honesty step: one question about what the audit revealed — what is this activation protecting against? The answer is almost always about the practitioner’s outcome rather than the prospect’s situation. Fear of not enough clients. Need for this particular yes. Uncertainty about whether the work is worth the price. Whatever the specific answer is, naming it shifts the relationship to the activation from unconscious management to conscious acknowledgment.

The service grounding: after the honest naming, bring genuine attention to the prospect’s situation. What have they shared? What would change for them if the work produced what it can produce? Allow the body’s response to genuine care for another person’s situation — a quality of warmth and settling — to arrive and be felt. This is the somatic experience of service orientation.

The body-first technique as the entry point develops this pre-conversation sequence in more detail. The somatic dimension of the before stage is the foundation from which everything else follows.

During: The Somatic Attention Hold

In the conversation itself, the somatic practice is simple to describe and genuinely difficult to maintain: keep a thread of somatic awareness running throughout. Not constant introspection — a thread. A small portion of attention remaining with the body’s experience while the larger portion is genuinely present with the prospect.

This thread serves two functions. It provides early warning of somatic drift — the specific quality of internal tightening or speeding up that signals the mindset has shifted from service to outcome-focus. And it provides the anchor for returning to service orientation when that drift is detected: a breath, a body return, a re-engagement with the prospect’s actual words.

The somatic regulation practice that supports this technique describes the general regulation capacity this practice requires. During the conversation, the somatic thread is the regulation practice applied specifically to the enrollment context.

The most important somatic moment during: the pause after the explicit offer. The body’s experience in this pause is the most accurate diagnostic of where the development is. Held breath and internal vigilance about the prospect’s response is the somatic signature of outcome-attachment. An open, accepting quality — a genuine willingness to receive whatever arrives — is the somatic signature of genuine non-attachment.

After: The Somatic Integration

After the enrollment conversation, five minutes of deliberate somatic attention before moving to the next task.

First, notice what the body is carrying from the conversation. Not evaluation — sensation. Where is there residue? Where is there relief or disappointment held in the body?

Then, one somatic acknowledgment practice: place one hand on the chest and allow the body to receive whatever genuinely deserves receiving from this conversation — the quality of presence that was maintained, the evidence of genuine fit that emerged, the genuine service that was offered regardless of outcome.

How this technique rewires the nervous system over time is the longer arc that the after stage specifically feeds. The post-conversation somatic integration is where the nervous system’s relationship to the enrollment context begins to change — each conversation ending with genuine reception rather than managed decompression is a repetition toward a genuinely different default state.

The full somatic approach to selling without pushing addresses all of this in its broader context. This article provides the somatic specifics for the three-stage technique.
