12 Questions to Clarify the Person You Need to Become

The person you need to become is often described in vague terms: more confident, more visible, more aligned. Vague descriptions produce vague work. Getting specific — in response to specific questions — tends to reveal what the work is actually for and where it needs to go.

These twelve questions are designed to produce specificity. Not every question will be immediately answerable. The ones that produce resistance are often the most useful ones to stay with.


1. What specific behavior, in what specific situation, would look different if you had made the identity shift?

Not “I would be more confident in general.” Be specific: “I would quote my rate at X to a new inquiry and hold it when they hesitate.” The specific behavior in the specific situation is the actual target.

2. What is the price you’re paying, in concrete terms, for the identity you’re currently running?

The income that isn’t coming in. The time spent in work that doesn’t fit. The energy consumed by relationships built on the old pattern. Name the cost specifically — not as self-criticism but as honest accounting.

3. When do you experience yourself as already being the person you need to become?

There are contexts, relationships, and moments where the new identity is already available. Identifying these reveals what conditions support it — and provides evidence that the identity is already partly real.

4. What is the specific fear that runs when you get close to the new identity?

Not “I’m afraid of failure” in the abstract. What specifically does the nervous system predict will happen if you charge that rate, post that content, hold that limit? The specific prediction is what needs updating.

5. What is the story the current identity tells about who has the right to be the person you need to become?

“People like me don’t…” — what follows that sentence? Who specifically has the right to charge that way, be that visible, hold those limits? What does the current identity believe is required to qualify?

6. What would you do first, tomorrow, if you knew the identity shift had already happened?

The first action point of the new identity is usually visible — it’s just the thing the old identity is declining to do. Naming it specifically points at where the experiment needs to be.

7. What relationships in your current life are calibrated to the old identity?

Who in your life is relating to you as the person you were, not the person you’re becoming? How are those relationships creating gravity toward the old identity? This isn’t about ending relationships — it’s about understanding the relational field clearly.

8. What would the person you need to become charge for the work you’re currently doing?

Specifically. Not “more” — what number? Working backward from what the new identity would charge clarifies the identity gap in concrete terms.

9. What belief about yourself would have to be different for the identity shift to feel natural?

Not “I believe I’m not worthy.” Specifically: “I believe that charging X will result in Y, and that Y is a threat I need to prevent.” The specific belief, in its specific form, is more workable than the general category.

10. What would need to be true about your evidence base for the resistance to update?

The patterns are protecting against specific predicted outcomes. What evidence would need to exist for those predictions to change? Naming the evidence that would produce the update points at what kind of experiments and experiences are needed.

11. Who do you know — personally or by reputation — who is already operating from the identity you’re working toward?

Real models matter. Not idealized figures — actual people whose existence demonstrates that the identity is real and available. What specifically can you learn from how they operate?

12. What will you have wished you did earlier, looking back from five years from now?

The long-term retrospective question tends to cut through the short-term risk calculations. The specific answer tends to be the work the current identity is declining.


These questions are most useful in writing — the answers that arrive quickly are often the answers the identity already approves of. The useful material tends to emerge from staying with the question longer than comfortable.
