10 Signs Your Self-Sabotage Pattern Is Running Things
Most self-sabotage patterns operate below the threshold of obvious recognition. They don’t usually announce themselves — they produce behaviors that have other-sounding explanations. The market is difficult. The timing isn’t right. The client needed a discount. The content wasn’t ready.
These signs cut through the explanations and point at the pattern directly.
1. You have a consistent income ceiling that doesn’t match your capability.
The ceiling is not a market problem. It is a threshold at which the pattern reliably activates. You hit the number. Something disrupts it. You rebuild to the same number. Something disrupts it again. The pattern is maintaining the ceiling, not the market.
2. You give discounts before anyone asks.
The discount arrives in your mind before the client has expressed any resistance. You’re in the pricing conversation and you’re already thinking about how to reduce the number. This is the economic minimizing pattern running in anticipation of a threat that hasn’t materialized.

The work always expands past the scope. You always give more than the agreement specifies. This is not generosity alone — generosity is a choice. 7. Recognition feels uncomfortable rather than good.
When someone says something genuinely appreciative about your work, the body response is not pleasure — it’s something more like urgency, deflection, or wanting to minimize. The receiving block is operating.
8. You’re more comfortable giving advice than receiving it.
In peer and community contexts, you naturally take the role of supporter, advice-giver, and helper. Being supported, receiving advice, asking for help activates the pattern. The role keeps you slightly below the peer level in a specific relational configuration.
