How One Practitioner Stopped Giving Free Sessions After a Single Realisation

She had framed this as a values expression: she believed in accessible healing, in not making her work only available to those with resources. This framing was real and felt true. And it was also the story she told herself that made the financial consequences of the pattern easier to carry.
Her income for three years had averaged $31,000 — in a practice where her peer set was earning $65,000 to $90,000 for comparable work.
The Realisation
The diagnostic that revealed what was driving it produced an uncomfortable clarity: the free sessions weren’t primarily about generosity. They were about avoiding the conversion conversation.
When someone asked for a session and she said yes without introducing the topic of payment, something in her relaxed. When someone asked for a session and she considered saying “I’d love to — let me tell you about how I work with people,” something in her braced. The relief at the free yes was the tell. Genuine generosity doesn’t produce relief from avoided discomfort; it produces straightforward warmth. The relief was the nervous system’s exhale at having avoided a conversation it had been treating as threatening.
Why the free sessions weren’t about generosity — or not primarily — was this: she was using the generosity frame to manage the anxiety of the money conversation. The free session was the path of least activation. The values story was accurate and also a rationalisation.
What the Pattern Was Doing
How the free-work pattern functions as a block is through its effect on conversion: it routes people who might have become paying clients into a different track. The free session often produced genuine value. It also, systematically, removed the occasion of the money conversation — which was the conversation she was structured to avoid.
The layer where the pattern operated was a combination of the somatic (the activation at the conversion conversation) and the narrative (the generosity story that made the pattern feel like a value rather than an avoidance). The repair required addressing both: building the capacity to stay present through the activation, and examining the narrative honestly enough to distinguish genuine generosity from avoidance in generosity’s clothing.
What Shifted
The specific shift was modest in scale and significant in impact. She established a clear structure: initial conversations about working together were 20-minute connection calls, not full sessions, and they included a clear description of how she works with paying clients. Full sessions were for paying clients.
She gave the people she genuinely wanted to support at accessible rates a proper sliding scale — which meant she was making a deliberate choice about pricing based on real values, not avoiding the money conversation by defaulting to free.
In the first six months after the structure change, her income increased by 40%. Not because she had stopped being generous, but because the generosity was now conscious and chosen rather than compelled by the avoidance of the money conversation.
