Does Partner and Family Dynamics Get Harder During Major Business Growth?
Q: I’m going through a period of significant business expansion — more clients, a team, more revenue. I expected this to feel easier, but my limit-holding challenges seem to be intensifying. Why?
Growth is one of the specific contexts that reliably activates the pattern more strongly, and understanding why helps.
Why Growth Intensifies It
Business growth produces several conditions that directly interact with the pattern:
Increased relational stakes: More clients, more team members, more partnerships mean more relational relationships whose continued positive regard feels important. The pattern’s threat-prediction system tracks relational stakes — more relationships with higher stakes means more activation surface.
Novelty and uncertainty: Growth involves navigating new relational contexts — team management, vendor relationships, larger client engagements — where the nervous system hasn’t yet established comfortable patterns. Novelty increases baseline activation.
Reduced regulatory resources: The cognitive and emotional load of running a growing business draws on the same regulatory resource pool that enables effective limit-holding. When growth is consuming significant resources, less is available for managing the pattern’s activation.
Higher visibility: Increased business success often means increased visibility. For people with the accommodation pattern, visibility can feel relationally dangerous — more people watching means more potential for the disapproval the pattern is protecting against.
This Is Not Failure
Growth activating the pattern more strongly doesn’t mean you’re regressing. It means the growth is creating new conditions that the nervous system hasn’t yet calibrated to.
The work during growth periods: reduce unnecessary resource expenditure where possible, address the most critical limit-holding situations, and build in enough recovery time that the regulatory resources aren’t chronically depleted.
Growth and this work are not at odds. The growth itself is generating exactly the practice arena the work needs.
The daily practice is designed to sustain through exactly these periods.
