Yes, you do have one mind.
However, the mind is very complex.
To be honest, you cannot even separate the mind from the body, or the mind from spirit.
The more accurate way to think of these things is to consider them as the “mind-body-spirit complex”, because they are One System.
However, for the sake of explaining our work here, we shall “separate” things.
The “egoic mind” is the the voice in our head that talks to us, our self-talk. This is what we usually think of as “our thoughts”. It is an ongoing mental commentary that never shuts up. It is composed of repetition – indeed, 90% of what it says is repetitive. And it is “stating the obvious”, offering unnecessary “thoughts” such as “that’s a tree… it’s so hot… why is it so hot… that guy is chewing with his mouth open…”
The functional mind is the truly practical aspect of the mind that we use to read, to learn, to calculate, and so on. The functional mind doesn’t speak to us. It is simply a necessary tool we use to navigate physicality.
And so as you can see, the ego is simply a “sense of self” that is created and maintained by the “self-talk” thought-stream that uses the mind in this particular way. There is no separation, and, in the strictest sense of it, no “self”, besides the sensation of self.
The practice of Mindfulness and meditation is the best tool for seeing through all this, personally, for you.
