How To Discover Your True Self

how to discover your true self

Do you want to find out who you truly are? Two of the biggest hurdles in discovering your authentic self are preexisting stories and beliefs.

In this blog post, I’ll share with you how these blocks started, why your self-image is warped, and how to clearly see your true self. Once you know the truth of who you are, you’ll regain control, purpose, freedom, and creativity.

You’ll also learn about the following:

  • How socialization affected your self-image
  • Why finding yourself actually helps others too
  • How discovering who you are makes you free
  • Why living an inauthentic life feels like a trance
  • 3 ways to free yourself from other people’s stories

Are you ready to get to know yourself? If so, let’s start!

How To Find Out Who You Truly Are

An individual discovers the reality of their identity once they start questioning old stories and beliefs that were ingrained by the cultural system. They should also avoid judging themself, stop resisting thoughts, and trust their true self.

How Society’s Stories Shaped Your Self-Concept

How Society’s Stories Shaped Your Self-Concept

You were born into a human/cultural story.

You find yourself as a little newborn surrounded by people.

And, each one of these people is a storyteller.

They are all telling you their version of the story.

The story contains beliefs about:

  • Life
  • God
  • Love
  • Work
  • Money
  • People
  • Religion
  • Education
  • Relationships

It is a collection of beliefs, but those who tell it don’t see it like that.

They see it as the way things are, the facts of life.

They take it very, very seriously, don’t they?

So, you are born into the story, surrounded by storytellers such as:

  • Friends
  • Parents
  • Teachers
  • Politicians
  • Religious leaders

Each of these storytellers is so convinced that their story is the right one (they would rather be right than happy) that they try to fit you into their story using any and all means possible.

And if you don’t fit their story, they feel their way of life is threatened.

Their fear of annihilation is great.

In fact, they even tell you that if you don’t live your life according to the story, these will happen to you:

  • You will not eat.
  • You won’t succeed.
  • You will not go to heaven.

That, something is wrong with you if you cannot or don’t want to live the story.

And so, you take on this fear of annihilation, believing that your normal self will get you in trouble.

You then do your best to live the story instead of living your Self.

Stories & Beliefs: The Biggest Blocks To Your True Self

Stories & Beliefs: The Biggest Blocks To Your True Self

Without the interference of these stories, who would you be?

If you were to set aside the shackles of your limited definitions and beliefs, what kind of person are you?

How about your heart’s desire and mind’s visions?

Would they drastically change?

The truth is you have no limits.

But, are you now seeing what keeps blocking you from the direct experience of who you are?

If you are living the story, the fabrication, how can you expect to know your real self?

Do you know why people live the story instead of living their dreams from their heart?

Because one of the lies told to them from the story is that living from your own mind and heart will not work.

The lie, which they believe, tells them that only by living the story will they survive.

It tells them something is wrong with them and they cannot live successfully as themselves, that they need a story, a mask self.

The lie within the story, within the cultural system, says that if you do not live by these rules and regulations:

  • Something is wrong with you.
  • You should be ashamed.
  • You should be punished.

The lie tells people that nothing is wrong with the story, the system, but everything is wrong with the people themselves.

The truth is, there is nothing wrong with you.

The story, the cultural system, is not the only way to live, nor is it necessarily correct just because most people follow it.

You can follow your heart and mind and live happily instead of serving a thousand different masters and voices.

The Amnesia Analogy

The Amnesia Analogy

To illustrate just how impactful stories and beliefs about yourself are, allow me to give you an analogy.

Let’s say someone has amnesia.

Ask yourself, do they really forget who they are?

Or, do they just forget the story of their life?

Think about it.

They only fail to recall the stories about themselves.

Here’s the truth:

They thought the story was them. After amnesia, without the story, they feel lost.

But, they are still right there.

The story is about the beliefs (and their manifestations) about self and life.

Is this what you call yourself? Is it really yourself?

Did you even consciously write your story or was it told to you in pieces over your lifetime?

You may have well have taken anyone else’s story if you had no criteria for selecting the story you now call yours.

If you lost your story, would you cease to exist?

What if you took on another story completely different from the one you currently carry around?

Who are you, really?

3 Ways To Break Free From Your Mask Self

3 Ways To Break Free From Your Mask Self

Now that you’ve learned how limiting beliefs and stories are, it’s time to peel off these layers to reveal your authentic self.

There are three things to remember:

#1 Don’t Judge Yourself

Don’t judge yourself

The first thing you need to do is stop judging yourself.

What you’re experiencing is a worldwide phenomenon.

Most people aren’t even aware of this.

So, don’t judge yourself for any of this, for anything, not even for judging yourself.

It is counterproductive in every way.

#2 Don’t Resist Your Thoughts

Don’t resist your thoughts

Allow the voices in your head.

Don’t fight them or resist them.

You cannot get rid of something by resisting it.

What you resist persists.

Your mind will eventually calm down and clear up on its own if you allow it.

But, adopt a new stance.

Instead of being in a trance, hypnotized by those voices (“thoughts”), watch them with detachment.

Accept them but don’t believe them.

Simply recognize they are there.

It is very amusing to watch them actually.

They then stop telling you what to do and feel, and they start revealing a new aspect of your nature.

They start revealing your beliefs, your depths, and so on.

You start to understand yourself, and as you do, each voice drops off, until finally they are all gone and you are left with a fresh, clear, calm, powerful mind of your own.

And as you allow your story to flow as it does, allow others their story, but don’t believe them blindly.

You don’t have to prove your story to anyone else for any reason, and everyone else has a right to ride their story as they wish.

It is what is called their business, and yours is your business.

It’s the only way you can get in touch with your True Self without interference.

It is OK to accept and offer help, but not to be forced or force another.

#3 Trust Your True Self

Trust your True Self

Now, realize that there are billions of people in the world, none of whom think exactly as you do, yet multitudes of them are successful in various ways.

You can confidently say that you can think in ways that can accomplish better results than you are currently achieving.

So, whenever you have stories and beliefs that make you doubt yourself, question them.

Are they truly beneficial or just an outdated notion?

The reality is that it is safe to be yourself.

You don’t have to follow what your culture or society pushes you to be because you are worthy of success, love, happiness, etc. just the way you are.

Right now, you can start getting to know yourself and believing that whoever you are is enough.

How Finding Yourself Also Helps Others

How Finding Yourself Also Helps Others

You may think that becoming who you truly are is a selfish act, that it will break your connection with others.

This is not the case.

In being yourself, you will be able to allow others to be themselves.

You will be able to love and accept yourself as you are and others as they are.

You’ll experience unconditional love and peace within, effortlessly and no matter what.

You will be able to allow everyone their story, not take it personally, and look beyond the story into the truth of who they really are.

You can be free to be yourself, effortlessly, and enjoy it!

You don’t have to be like a ship in rough seas, tossed all over the place by all the stories in your mind and others’ because you can find your Self, have your Self as the anchor, and lead a stable life.

Conclusion

Getting to know yourself is a journey that is worth taking. It is time for you to go back to your roots and realize that you were brought into this earth for a meaningful purpose,

So, start questioning stories you were conditioned to believe and start understanding who you truly are.

You’ll be doing yourself and the rest of the world a huge favor.

I also wanted to leave you with this quote by Bertrand Russel:

“One should as a rule respect public opinion in so far as it is necessary to avoid starvation and to keep out of prison, but anything that goes beyond this is voluntary submission to an unnecessary tyranny.”
