James Madison (4th U.S. President) said that you cannot have a democracy unless the people know what is going on. Your vote is meaningless if you don’t know what your leaders will do with it in your name.
Here are some quotes on the dangers of the people allowing government secrecy to continue as it does today:
“The liberties of a people never were, nor ever will be, secure, when the transactions of their rulers may be concealed from them.” – Patrick Henry, American colonial revolutionary
“Without publicity, no good is permanent; under the auspices of publicity, no evil can continue.” – Jeremy Bentham, 1768
“Knowledge will forever govern ignorance; and a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives.” – James Madison, 4th US president
“A popular government, without popular information, or the means of acquiring it, is but a prologue to a farce or a tragedy; or, perhaps both.” – James Madison, 1832
“I believe that a guarantee of public access to government information is indispensable in the long run for any democratic society. If officials make public only what they want citizens to know, then publicity becomes a sham and accountability meaningless.” – Sissela Bok, Swedish philosopher, 1982
“The overarching purpose of access to information legislation … is to facilitate democracy. It does so in two related ways. It helps to ensure first, that citizens have the information required to participate meaningfully in the democratic process, and secondly, that politicians and bureaucrats remain accountable to the citizenry.” – Gerard LaForest, former Supreme Court of Canada Justice, in Dagg vs. Canada (1997)
“Government ought to be all outside and no inside. . . . Everybody knows that corruption thrives in secret places, and avoids public places, and we believe it a fair presumption that secrecy means impropriety.” – Woodrow Wilson, 28th US President
“Secrecy, being an instrument of conspiracy, ought never to be the system of a regular government.” – Jeremy Bentham
“For the most part, officials love secrecy because it is a tool of power and control, not because the information they hold is particularly sensitive by nature.” – John Reid, Baron Reid of Cardowan, British Defense Secretary from 2005 to 2006, and Home Secretary from 2006 to 2007
“Secrecy is for losers. . . . It is time to dismantle government secrecy, this most persuasive of Cold War-era regulations. It is time to begin building the supports for the era of openness that is already upon us.” – Senator Patrick Moynihan
“For the government to carry on in such secrecy shows a lack of trust in democratic principles and a disrespect for democratic values. It contends that a few people know what is best for society. This is not true in matters of security any more than in other matters. Self-servers (Service-To-Selfs) within government have used the excuse of national security to manipulate your institutions for their own benefit. Much too much of your government operates secretly. This must end if you are to be a truly free and democratic society. The people must adjust the laws to protect themselves from self-servers in government: The enemy is among you!” – The Extraterrestrial Vision: Who Is Here and Why, by Gina Lake
Most Of Us Have No Idea How Deep Secrecy Goes, Or How Far They Go To Enforce It
Here are two interviews that will open your eyes wide on this:
LIVE: Snowden Q&A on how US Election affects your life (or doesn’t), and how mass surveillance is putting you more and more into a box without rights
Edward Joseph Snowden (born June 21, 1983) is an American computer professional, former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) employee and former contractor for the United States government who copied and leaked classified information from the National Security Agency (NSA) in 2013 without prior authorization. His disclosures revealed numerous global surveillance programs, many run by the NSA and the Five Eyes Intelligence Alliance with the cooperation of telecommunication companies and European governments.
In 2013, Snowden was hired by an NSA contractor, Booz Allen Hamilton, after previous employment with Dell and the CIA. On May 20, 2013, Snowden flew to Hong Kong after leaving his job at an NSA facility in Hawaii and in early June he revealed thousands of classified NSA documents to journalists Glenn Greenwald, Laura Poitras and Ewen MacAskill. Snowden came to international attention after stories based on the material appeared in The Guardian and The Washington Post. Further disclosures were made by other newspapers including Der Spiegel and The New York Times.
On June 21, 2013, the U.S. Department of Justice unsealed charges against Snowden of two counts of violating the Espionage Act of 1917 and theft of government property. On June 23, he flew to Moscow, Russia, where he remained for over a month. Russian authorities granted him one-year asylum, which was later extended to three years. As of 2016, he was still living in an undisclosed location in Russia while seeking asylum elsewhere.
A subject of controversy, Snowden has been variously called a hero, a whistleblower, a dissident, a patriot and a traitor. His disclosures have fuelled debates over mass surveillance, government secrecy and the balance between national security and information privacy.
Watch this rare live interview he gave right before Donald Trump won the election, it reveals some very interesting insights from around the 10th minute onwards:

And here, President John F. Kennedy warns against secrecy (just before he got assassinated)
The day we, as a population, choose integrity and transparency over secrecy, we shall invent systems that allow us to watch everything our leaders do.
Consciousness creates physics.
Once we choose integrity and transparency over secrecy, the new inventions to make that happen automatically will arise. New paradigms arise from new consciousness.
