Why Limiting Beliefs Got Worse After I Started Doing Inner Work

The experience of starting inner work and having things feel harder rather than easier is more common than most frameworks acknowledge. And the lack of acknowledgement tends to amplify the difficulty — because when it’s not named, it reads as evidence that something is wrong with you, rather than something predictable about the process.

Here’s what’s usually happening.


The Disruption of Equilibrium

Before inner work begins, most people have developed a functioning equilibrium — a way of managing their lives, their patterns, and their inner experience that keeps things stable enough. The limiting beliefs are part of this equilibrium. They’re not comfortable, but they’re known. The system has calibrated around them.

When inner work begins, it disrupts this equilibrium. It introduces new awareness, new practices, new ways of relating to the self. The calibrated stability is disturbed.

In the short term, disrupted equilibrium tends to feel worse, not better. Things that were stable become less stable. Patterns that were quiet become louder. The familiar architecture of the self is being rearranged, which is inherently disorienting before it becomes settling.


The Attention Effect

Inner work directs sustained attention toward patterns that were previously receiving less attention. And what we attend to becomes more present in our awareness — which is often experienced as becoming more present in our life.

A limiting belief that fires three times a week but goes largely unnoticed is a different experience from a limiting belief that fires three times a week and is noticed each time. The frequency hasn’t changed. The registration has.

When inner work increases the registration — when the belief becomes visible in a way it wasn’t — the experience is of the belief increasing in frequency or intensity, even when the underlying pattern hasn’t changed.


The Expectation Gap

There’s also the matter of expectation. Before inner work, the limiting beliefs are simply present — uncomfortable, but not evidence of a problem in the inner work domain, because there is no inner work domain yet.

Once inner work begins, the limiting beliefs become evidence of something — specifically, evidence about how the inner work is or isn’t progressing. They become a measure of the work’s effectiveness.

This reframing produces a secondary layer of difficulty: not just the belief itself, but the anxiety about what the belief’s persistence means about the inner work. The beliefs that were simply present before are now also indicators of progress or regression. That’s an additional weight.


When It Genuinely Gets Harder

Sometimes things getting harder after beginning inner work isn’t the disturbance effect or the attention effect — it’s the genuine surfacing of material that the beginning of the work has made accessible.

Some things need to be looked at before they can move. Inner work creates the container in which looking becomes possible. And looking, at first, is harder than not looking.

The grief that surfaces. The patterns that become legible as patterns. The history that becomes available for examination rather than buried beneath function. These are genuinely difficult — and their surfacing is the work making progress, even when it feels like regression.


The Specific Support This Phase Requires

The phase where inner work initially makes things harder requires specific kinds of support:

Enough regulation capacity to be in contact with the surfacing material without being overwhelmed by it.

Community and witnessing — the presence of others who understand this phase, have been through it themselves, and can confirm that it’s a stage rather than a destination.

Patience with the process — the willingness to remain present in the difficult phase without prematurely judging the direction.
